The department has created a new Gun Crimes Unit that will use technology and data, as well as intelligence gathered by investigators, to connect the guns used during crimes to criminals. The new unit, which currently has two investigators, was launched on Feb. 1.
North Gwinnett's Caiden Wilson back on baseball field less than a year after potentially-fatal head injury
UpdatedBecca Wilson had a gut feeling that, after her son, Caiden, was hit in the head with a baseball before a game in April 2022, that his injury might be worse than it initially appeared.
Caiden, who plays for North Gwinnett High School’s baseball team, was knocked unconscious after the ball hit him during batting practice before a game against Loganville High School. He had been loading balls into the pitching machine and couldn’t get behind a protective screen in time before a teammate hit a line drive up the middle.
ARC board chairman says declining housing affordability 'not sustainable' for Gwinnett, rest of metro Atlanta

Gwinnett leaders help mark two-year anniversary of spa shootings
UpdatedGwinnett County legislators, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson and U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath participated in a remembrance marking the two-year anniversary of two shootings that shook the local Asian-American community.
The shootings happened on March 16, 2021 at two Asian-owned spas in metro Atlanta, one in Atlanta and another in Cherokee County, and resulted in the deaths of eight people. Many people have labeled the shootings as racially-motivated hate crimes because most of the victims were Asian-Americans.
New principals named for two Gwinnett schools

Gwinnett school board puts off decision on proposed health, sex education curriculum change as state schools chief raises concerns
UpdatedGwinnett County’s school board put off making a decision on Gwinnett County Public Schools’ proposed new health and sex education curriculum on Thursday amid ongoing pushback from parents and after Georgia’s top education official raised concerns about it.
The board unanimously voted to remove the $15 million proposed health curriculum, known as HealthSmart, from its meeting agenda at the beginning of the gathering. It is unclear at this point when the curriculum will be voted on.
Whataburger postpones opening of new Buford location by a few days
UpdatedWhataburger announced on Thursday that it will still open its new Buford location next week — but, just not as early in the week as it had previously announced.
The restaurant chain said the opening of its first Gwinnett County location — its third in metro Atlanta — until March 23. It had previously said the location, which is in the Exchange @ Gwinnett on Buford Drive at Interstate 85, would open earlier in the week.
Police asking for information on disappearance of Selena Garcia
UpdatedGwinnett County police are calling for information on what happened to a Hispanic woman who disappeared after going out with friends last fall.
Police issued a call for information on he whereabouts of Selena Garcia on Monday. Garcia’s family last heard from her on Oct. 7, her sister Zaira Garcia told the Daily Post last week. The 25-year-old told her sister she was going out with friends. Her family has not heard from her since then. Her sister said a message she sent a few days later was marked read, but never responded to.
Multi-agency law enforcement group arrests 25 suspected gang members named in 210-count indictment
UpdatedTwenty-five people named in a 210-count indictment — for crimes ranging from racketeering to murder, gang activity and armed robbery — have been arrested by multiple law enforcement agencies, including agencies from Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett County police announced their Gang Unit worked with the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the DeKalb County Police Department, the Fulton County district Attorney’s Office and the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office to make the arrests.
